    ‘All the world’s a stage and all these men and women really players’ As You Like It – William Shakespeare

    On Friday 12 May 2017 Natalie Wearden and Katie Dale-Everett will facilitate Authenticity of Action for OPENLAB at Chisenhale Dance Space – Research Studio, 10 AM-1 PM.

    The main questions that will drive Katie and Natalie’s facilitation are:

    • To what extent is performance present in everyday interaction?
    • In what ways are those performances restricted by the conventions of our circumstances?
    • How are unconscious performances different to those that are rehearsed, instructed or intentional?

    In his 1967 book The Presentation of the Self in Everyday Life, Erving Goffman draws a comparison between the theatre and the performativity of everyday interaction. Goffman argues that all human interaction is a performance, seeking to elicit a particular response or interpretation of the other/s. In a digital age, we are able to perform even greater sections of our lives for a constantly available audience, whenever, wherever and however we desire.

    In this OPENLAB Natalie and Katie will embrace the slips in performances, the mistakes and interruptions. They will question their awareness of performance in everyday life and the space between rehearsed and unintentional performativity. They also wish to question how might a performance or choreographic practice be organised similarly to our everyday presentation of self?

    If a dancer makes a mistake, could it be similar to muddling up words, awkward silences, misunderstandings or inappropriate laughter? They will play in the space between rehearsal, performance and everyday interaction asking what constitutes an audience, a performance or an authentic action.

    ====================================================

    OPENLAB sessions are open to any performers: dancers, musicians, actors and anyone interested in presence and awareness in performance.

    The facilitators of OPENLAB are also participants “in” the session and participants can propose their ideas for a future session. If you’d like to know more about this, come to one of our sessions or e-mail Antonio de la Fe (antonio.delafeguedes@gmail.com).

    The sessions function in a pay-what-you-can contribution basis to cover expenses and as an incentive for the facilitator of the session. We suggest a £7 contribution for the 3-hour long sessions (‘Facilitated OL’ sessions).

    Katie Dale-Everett Dance is a cross-genre choreographic dance company whose mission is to create works and projects that are accessible, informative, relevant, enjoyable and educational. The company has made a series of works that question what happens to our information in the increasingly digitalised society that we live in and how we engage with social media.

    Katie has just started research and development into a new work for KS4 questioning the difference between our virtual and physical self in presentation and behaviour for which she is interested in incorporating an extended cast of 11-16 year olds. During her residency at DanceEast, Katie and her dancers are offering the opportunity for young people to join the company to begin exploring what these scenes could be. This is the second stage of her research and development, with the company previously having a residency to develop the work at The Point’s Creation Space in 2017.

    Workshops Information:

    Dates: Wednesday 4th to Friday 6th April 2018

    Time: 09.30 - 16.30
    Ages: 11-16yrs
    Location: DanceEast, Jerwood DanceHouse, Foundry Ln, Ipswich IP4 1DW Price: Free
