Week three of Creative Futures: Behind the Movemen

Week three of Creative Futures: Behind the Movement’ taught students how to make their own original compositions for ‘Playscape: How to Build a Galaxy’.

Led by dancer Gabby Sanders who is also a brilliant composer for dance works, students shared their work with their peers at the end of the session.

Week two of Creative Futures: Behind the Movement’ taught participants how to use Blender, a 3D modelling software.

Each participant designed an item for our ‘Empathy Lab’, a new work we have been developing.

Last autumn, we were supported by Escalate Arts to deliver our new programme, ‘Creative Futures: Behind the Movement’, at a secondary school in Surrey. Drawing on the wide range of creative skills within the KDE Dance team, students were able to sign up for a series of after school workshops. These sessions developed creative skills essential for the future workforce, skills that are not typically taught in schools.

Last year our Artistic Director Katie was lucky enough to be supported by the Lisa Ullmann Travelling Scholarship Main Fund Award to travel to Lithuania to the European Association of Dance Movement Therapy (EADMT).

“Having a range of experience working with people with health challenges including those living with dementia, periodic limb disorders and poor mental health, I could see how my work was making positive impacts on people, but I wanted to further understand where my work sits on the continuum of movement in healthcare and to better understand what my offer is and how I might work with a Dance Movement Therapist (DMT) in the future.”

2025 was an exciting year of creative growth, mark

2025 was an exciting year of creative growth, marked by the development of new work, the expansion of delivery programmes, and meaningful engagement with people of all ages, from babies to pensioners.

I will release the full impact report in the new year but wanted to take the time to thank everyone who has been involved in supporting, delivering and participating in my work.

Commission Announcement: Escalate Arts is an Art

Commission Announcement:

Escalate Arts is an Arts Council England funded initiative, designed to transform how people work, design, enjoy and participate in the arts in Spelthorne. The project has been developed in partnership between Surrey County Council, Spelthorne Borough Council, Artswork and Ashford Youth Club, and aims to: Transform Surrey’s new flagship library in Staines-upon-Thames into a ‘cultural hub’ for the community; Increase engagement with arts and culture locally; Develop creative skills opportunities and infrastructure and develop youth leadership in the local area.

We are one of ten creative organisations/freelancers who have been awarded commissioning funding as part of a borough-wide community programme that supports enhanced relationships between local community and cultural organisations to deliver workshops so that more children and young people can access and take part in high quality arts activities.

We did something a little spooky this week during

We did something a little spooky this week during my creative dance sessions for Equal Arts. We conjured some spells, put on our witch scarfs and danced with pumpkins before creating our own pumpkin carving designed inspired by a pumpkin Lino carving I made and brought in. We then created a movement phrase using their designs as a stimulus.

“I am a contemporary dance artist based in Brighton. Since completing from my Masters degree in Dance Performance from the University of Chichester in 2023 I have toured work by Lîla Dance, Ceyda Tanc Dance and Flexer and Sandiland. I have also worked on projects with Morvell Dance, Ascension Dance, Downtown Pompey and the National Youth Dance Company. Prior to studying, I was a member of the National Youth Dance Company in 2019, led by Botis Seva, artistic director of Far From The Norm.

“I am a dancer, maker and facilitator working across the UK and Italy. I work with the body and movement to explore possibilities, transformation, choice, multiplicity. I see dance and movement as creating spaces for exploring and practicing ways of being, ways of relating, ways of approaching life, ways of being in space; for creating alternatives to the normative structures and systems of power. Spaces for practicing presence; practicing play and curiosity; practicing dissidence, disrupting and imagining. I am passionate about exploring the body and movement through a queer and trans lens - queering up the body and reclaiming the potential and possibilities of dissident bodies, celebrating their imaginative and revolutionary superpowers.”

Welcoming to the team the amazing Colette Kite who had joined the team as a performer and facilitator for ‘Playscape: How to Build a Galaxy’ and had been doing an amazing job learning the role this week. Find out more about her below:

“I’m Colette, a dance artist based in the South East of England. I trained professionally at the Northern School of Contemporary Dance (2017–2020), working with choreographers including Lea Anderson and Gary Clarke during my studies.

After graduating, I co-founded the award-winning company MANA DANCE (2017–2024) — a female contemporary fusion duo where I worked as both choreographer and performer. MANA DANCE toured nationally across theatres and festivals.

I am currently a dancer with Ceyda Tanc Dance (CTD), a Turkish contemporary all-female company, performing and touring multiple professional works both nationally and internationally. Alongside my contemporary practice, I continue to explore a wide range of styles including hip hop, street, commercial and Latin dance.”

We’ve received lots of questions about applying

We’ve received lots of questions about applying if you don’t meet all the criteria, as well as applications that meet nearly all but not quite everything. We’re happy to consider applications from those who don’t meet every requirement; however, please note this may affect the likelihood of being invited to audition. We will also only consider applications from dancers who live within 60 miles of Eastbourne and have a minimum of 2 years’ experience.

Priority for audition invitations will be given to those living in East Sussex with 3+ years of experience.
